California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) Information for Families
Knightsen Elementary & Old River Elementary

Families of students in grades 3–8 at Knightsen Elementary School and Old River Elementary School are being informed that students will be invited to participate in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), sponsored by the California Department of Education.

The California Healthy Kids Survey is designed to gather important information about school climate, student well-being, and overall school experience. The feedback collected helps schools and districts better understand how to support students and improve learning environments.

Important Dates:

Week of April 6: Information about the survey and parent consent forms will be sent home with students.

Week of April 20: The survey will be administered to participating students.

Families may review sample hard copy versions of the survey at the front office of each school site. Or you are welcome to email cchenault@knightsen.k12.ca.us for a PDF copy.

We encourage families to review the information carefully once it is sent home. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students and schools.

Hello Knightsen and Old River Community. We are selling our lift van. If you are interested and have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school district. See flier for more information. We are looking to auction this van on Friday, January 9th at 4:00pm. Van is older, however, only has 67,000 miles. Hydraulic lift works great and has been maintained. Someone attempted to steal the catalytic converter. The converter is still in place; however, exhaust pipe needs to be welded. $8,000 reserve bid.

Hello KESD Families,
Contra Costa Health is asking residents to take its public health survey to better understand the health needs of our community. This “community health assessment” serves as a critical foundation for improving public health outcomes and advancing health equity.

The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and you can enter a raffle for a $50 gift card after completing the survey. The survey not only asks about health issues like access to care and chronic conditions, but also food security, housing and general well-being. It’s also available in multiple languages. Your input is valuable and appreciated.

Every Day Counts!!!

Good school attendance builds great futures. Students who are in school every day learn more, build stronger friendships, and have brighter futures. Chronically absent means that a student misses at least 10% of the school year, or two days per month, and is an indicator that the student is off track for learning.  Students who are chronically absent in preschool and kindergarten are much less likely to read and count proficiently by the end of third grade. Good attendance helps build the skills needed to be successful in school, and beyond!

A huge SHOUT OUT to the TUPE Crew from Knightsen and Old River Elementary Schools. Together with student leaders from Excelsior, they went to Sacramento to meet with Assembly Woman Lori Wilson to advocate for TUPE funding to be reinstated. TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) funds provide schools with the financial resources to educate students on the dangers of tobacco use and vaping. Please join me in congratulating these students on their advocacy and willingness to go to Sacramento to meet with state legislators to discuss the importance of this funding.

Hello KESD Families, Just an FYI that we will have a total lunar eclipse on Tuesday, March 3rd from 3:00am until 4:00am. You may hear this referred to as a "Blood Moon" due to the coppery-red color associated with the eclipse.

Science fact: During totality of a Lunar Eclipse the Earth's atmosphere filters sunlight, scattering blue light and letting only red/orange wavelengths reach the Moon—creating the Blood Moon effect. Weather permitting (clear sky) the moon should be a bright red color over our western sky! Unlike a solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse is totally safe to view without special glasses or filters. With binoculars or a telescope you can enhance the reddish details of the moon.

I wanted to pass this along for a fun and interesting event that you could share with your children. Getting up early is the hardest part of viewing this beautiful natural phenomenon. Enjoy nature!
