We invite all parents and guardians to join us for our upcoming Parent University evening on Thursday, September 24th at Knightsen School.
This important presentation, Run, Hide, Defend, is designed to provide families with important information about our school district's emergency preparedness and safety response strategies. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the principles used during critical incidents, learn how these concepts support the safety and security of our students, staff, and school community. Attendees will also be able to preview the presentation materials that will be used in our presentation to our students.
We are especially grateful for our partnership with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, whose collaboration and expertise helps make this event possible. Sheriff's Department representatives will share information, answer questions, and help families better understand the coordinated efforts that take place to keep our schools safe.
At KESD, the safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We believe informed and engaged families are an essential part of maintaining a secure learning environment, and we encourage all parents to attend.

We are honored to be joined by representatives from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, who will help support the discussion and answer questions about school safety practices.
This evening is an opportunity to strengthen our partnership with families, build understanding of our safety procedures, and reinforce the trust our community places in our staff to keep students safe while they are at school.
We look forward to seeing you there and working together to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for every student.

Here is some important information from our friends at the Contra Costa Sheriff Department about getting to and from school safely. Also, in 2025, new legislative changes came about with respect to ebikes and scooters. Thank you for your help in getting everyone to and from school safely each and every day.

We have additional bike and scooter parking at Old River. Grades 6-8 bike/scooter parking will be inside the enclosure on the north side of the MP room. All student riders must wear properly fitting helmets and walk their bike/scooter once they turn into the parent loop from learning lane.
Parents, please review these important details with your student riders.
- Follow all traffic signs, signals, and rules of the road.
- Yield to pedestrians and always show courtesy and respect.
- Never "tag," startle, chase, or interfere with pedestrians.
- California law prohibits carrying passengers on e-scooters.
- Never park your bike or scooter in a fire lane.
Your partnership in helping our students travel safely and respectfully to and from school is absolutely critical. By working together and reinforcing these expectations at home and at school, we can help ensure that every student arrives safely each morning and returns safely home each afternoon.

Contra Costa Health is asking residents to take its public health survey to better understand the health needs of our community. This “community health assessment” serves as a critical foundation for improving public health outcomes and advancing health equity.
The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and you can enter a raffle for a $50 gift card after completing the survey. The survey not only asks about health issues like access to care and chronic conditions, but also food security, housing and general well-being. It’s also available in multiple languages. Your input is valuable and appreciated.

Good school attendance builds great futures. Students who are in school every day learn more, build stronger friendships, and have brighter futures. Chronically absent means that a student misses at least 10% of the school year, or two days per month, and is an indicator that the student is off track for learning. Students who are chronically absent in preschool and kindergarten are much less likely to read and count proficiently by the end of third grade. Good attendance helps build the skills needed to be successful in school, and beyond!

Knightsen Elementary & Old River Elementary
Families of students in grades 3–8 at Knightsen Elementary School and Old River Elementary School are being informed that students will be invited to participate in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), sponsored by the California Department of Education.
The California Healthy Kids Survey is designed to gather important information about school climate, student well-being, and overall school experience. The feedback collected helps schools and districts better understand how to support students and improve learning environments.
Important Dates:
Week of April 6: Information about the survey and parent consent forms will be sent home with students.
Week of April 20: The survey will be administered to participating students.
Families may review sample hard copy versions of the survey at the front office of each school site. Or you are welcome to email cchenault@knightsen.k12.ca.us for a PDF copy.
We encourage families to review the information carefully once it is sent home. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students and schools.

Science fact: During totality of a Lunar Eclipse the Earth's atmosphere filters sunlight, scattering blue light and letting only red/orange wavelengths reach the Moon—creating the Blood Moon effect. Weather permitting (clear sky) the moon should be a bright red color over our western sky! Unlike a solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse is totally safe to view without special glasses or filters. With binoculars or a telescope you can enhance the reddish details of the moon.
I wanted to pass this along for a fun and interesting event that you could share with your children. Getting up early is the hardest part of viewing this beautiful natural phenomenon. Enjoy nature!

A huge congratulations to our Knightsen Elementary Employees of the Year! We are proud to recognize, Mrs. Gould as our 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year as well as Mrs. Ochoa as our 2026-2027 Classified Employee of the Year! Both outstanding individuals and employees! Join me in celebrating!

Hello Knightsen and Old River Community. We are selling our lift van. If you are interested and have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school district. See flier for more information. We are looking to auction this van on Friday, January 9th at 4:00pm. Van is older, however, only has 67,000 miles. Hydraulic lift works great and has been maintained. Someone attempted to steal the catalytic converter. The converter is still in place; however, exhaust pipe needs to be welded. $8,000 reserve bid.

You're invited to a special workshop this Thursday evening with our School Psychologist, Ms. Lenz, and Counselor, Mrs. Bothwell. 📍 Where: Old River Elementary MP Room
🕕 When: 6:00–7:00 PM
Let’s work together to support our students’ well-being. We hope to see you there!
