7th Grade Focus Standards

English Language Arts

  1. 7.RL.4 - Reading Standards for Literature – Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama.

  2. 7.RI.1- Reading Standards for Informational Text – Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

  3. 7.W.9a - Writing – Draw evidence from literary texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  4. 7.W.9b - Writing – Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  5. 7.SL.1 - Speaking and Listening – Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

  6. 7.L.2 - Language – Demonstrate command of the conventions of grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

  7. 7.RL.1 - Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

  8. 7.RL.6 - Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.

  9. 7.RI.2 - Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text

  10. 7.W.4 - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above)

Mathematics

  1. 7.NS.3 - The Number System – Solve real-world & mathematical probs. involving the four operations with rational numbers.

  2. 7.RP.2 - Ratios and Proportional Relationships – Recognize & represent proportional relationships between two quantities.

      a. Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.

  3. 7.RP.3 - Ratios and Proportional Relationships – Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase, decrease, and percent error.

  4. 7.EE.4 - Expressions and Equations – Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

                                      a. Solve word problems leading to equations...

                                      b. Solve word problems leading to inequalities...

  5. 7.G.6 - Geometry – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

  6. 7.SP.7 -  Statistics and Probability – Develop a probability model and use it to find probabilities of events. Compare probabilities from a model to observed frequencies; if the agreement is not good, explain possible discrepancies.   a. Develop a uniform probability model by assigning equal probability to all outcomes, and use the model to determine probabilities of events...

  7. 7.EE.1 - Expressions and Equations - Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.

  8. 7.G.4 - Geometry - Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

  9. 7.NS.1 - Number System - Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

  10. 7.NS.2 - Number System - Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.
